Dr Ihirangi Heke
Dr. Ihi Heke is a health & physical education consultant involved in a number of national and international projects. Dr Heke has been advising in Japan, Ireland, Hawaii and recently completed a research project with Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore) where he was funded by the Global Obesity Prevention Centre to conduct a study using traditional indigenous health approaches alongside Systems Dynamics. Dr Heke is also an honorary research fellow to the University of Auckland in Biostatistics, a post doctoral research fellow to Awanuiarangi and previously held roles in Physical Education at the University of Otago. Dr Heke is an elite athlete performance consultant to New Zealand Sport, with specialities in swimming, cycling and motorsport. Dr Heke recently completed writing the Atua Matua Māori Environmental Framework where the framework has been used by the Ministry of Education to review the hauora curriculum and by the Ministry of Health to assist Healthy Families New Zealand. Atua Matua has also been used by Auckland Regional Council, Toi Tangata, Te Papa Takaro o Te Arawa Te Kura Kaupapa o Kaikohe and Te Aitanga a Hauiti Hauora. Dr Heke has since developed a number of 'Virtual Tours' that use Google Earth as the platform for delivering indigenous knowledge at a regional level with with incidental gains in health, physical activity and exercise.
